    Recommended Do's and Don'ts:

     

    Before hiring a home improvement contractor we recommend the following:

    • Make sure the contractor is licensed.  In Maryland it is a criminal offense to perform home improvements without a license. Check for active license holders at the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation http://www.dllr.state.md.us/pq/.

     

    • Get the job specifics in writing.  Have a written contract for all work.

     

    • The Maryland Home Improvement Commission does not recommend that you pay more than 30% of entire job costs before the start of the job.

     

    • Verify that your contractor is insured.  Ask for a current copy of insurance certificates.

     

    • Check for customer complaints by calling the Maryland Home Improvement Commission at 410-230-6309 or 1-888-218-5925 and ask if complaints have been filed against the contractor and whether they have been resolved or are still open.

     

    • Ask your contractor for a list of customer referrals.  Call the referrals with a list of questions.
